1993.07.16 - Stanhope, NJ, USA @ Waterloo Village (Lollapalooza)
Main Stage
Source A: Analog --- Sony PC-62 > Sony WM-D3
Notes: Excellent quality for such an old and previously unknown source. The instruments all are exceptionally clear, the bass has a natural sound that really thumps & gets you. I bet that many people would think that this is actually sourced from a DAT rather than from a cassette as the overall quality is actually that good. However, the vocals sometimes come to the edge and perhaps even go over the edge & sort of bleeds or saturates, just a little. But if one would let that little issue stand in the way of an overall tight recording for the time period & circumstances, then, too bad - you are missing out. Although the crowd is quite annoying, sounds like the taper's friends are tripping on acid or 'shrooms & they enjoy talking about this-and-that, the conversations sort of give this recording an even more live feeling. At least to me. Overall, this is definitely a recording to go for, enjoy & spend a good time listening to. The first time I listened to this recording, I actually busted out laughing... see, the taper says that all he wants to hear is 'Jerk-Off'. He mentions this a few times. Then, right at the end, Adam starts playing 'Jerk-Off', the taper is like "yes!" & then they stop & say "out of time". The taper cannot believe it. So very, very amusing.

Zack De La Rocha, spoken word on Bottom:
You've grown to know me, and I'll tangle within myself
You've held my head straight to face you,
Though I fail the test of what you try to tell me
You've got my skin, and I've got your genes
You got my eyes, and I've voiced your screams
Flow, falling through a dark room, and I can't find the bottom
I panic, and I mash my teeth and flail - still I can't find the bottom
And all the while, someone could tell me
That this isn't what this life seems
I got your eyes, and soon you'll voice my screams
Shameless now ***
I'm nameless now ***
I'm nothing now ***
I'm no one now ***
My soul must be iron ***
Cuz my fear is naked ***
I'm naked and fearless and my... and my fear is naked! ***
*** = with MJK

Notes:
Every Saturday night in the early 1990's, there was a wonderful show called "Headbanger's Ball", hosted by Riki Rachtman, that highlighted the heaviest, most intense and popular hard-rock bands in the current music scene. I was turned on to many bands such as Warrior Soul, Faster Pussycat, Love/Hate, Rage Against The Machine, Alice In Chains & Screaming Trees (among others) from this program. I remember that I always thought Riki was very, very cool -until he cut his hair. Anyway. This episode of Headbanger's Ball was taped from the Waterloo Village in New Jersey as part of the 3-day Lollapalooza stay & features interviews with Alice In Chains, Fishbone & Danny + MJK of Tool. The entire episode of this was not taped; just the beginning of the program to the Tool part & everything in-between including commercials. Now, I have a feeling that some people will roll their eyes & say "you lie" but I honest-to-God remember watching this episode when I was younger while on MTV. Although I the interviews with Tool + Alice In Chains were blurry before I re-watched this (Note: Stayley looks really, really doped out of his mind) I do remember Riki talking to a guy who created artwork for Alice In Chains song "Rooster". This does feature about 20 seconds of Tool performing but this is really interesting to watch for the content & the situation of where Tool & some of there comrades 'are' at this time in 1993. Highly recommended.
Maynardism / Interview w/Riki Rachtman:
"That was the first time my pictures ever been taken."
"They open for us" (when asked who plays first, Tool or RATM)
"Uhh... Hi mom"

Notes: The first song in the set, like many from this era of the boards, has some technical issues with panning & has something best described as a "muffled" texture to the sound. Starts out in the right channel, fluctuates to others. Gets bad, gets ok then it is just fine. Of particular interest is something cu.org has not noticed on many other versions of Bottom... a delay on MJK's vocals through layers of silence interspersed with the dum-dum-daaah-dum of the bass, snare & kick drum. Interesting. This performance was the last that Tool would perform as a Second Stage act as they replaced Babes In Toyland on the main stage for the next date: 07/16/1993.
