2001.10.04 - Albany, NY, USA @ Pepsi Arena
Source A: DAT --- Core Sound Binaurals > Sony TCD-D100
Taper: Toaster
Notes: Really pleasant capture. Surprised this is not a bit higher rated. I wish I recalled where on Earth I received the DAT-Clone from as it has been years. A decent number of tapers made it up to Albany this evening for the big Tool rock show; more than the second night of MSG in New York City.

Source B: Mini Disc --- Sony ECM-MS908C > Sony MZ-R700
Taper: Charles C.
Gen: 1st from Master
Notes: Good audience recording. The microphones capture the ambience of the venue nicely. There is no brickwall or anything like that. Some could say that the recording seems to keep a good balance of high & low end, mixed together - I like that. But, you can hear the limitation of the microphones if you listen closely. Or, maybe, that is just my opinion. Overall, this is a very good capture of what Tool is as a live band but is nothing remarkable other than the fact that it is a good Tool recording. There is slight high end distortion though, if you strain your ears a little as well. The band seemed pretty 'on' this night as well. Shows from this era, post-9/11, are interesting to me, at least. They seem to evoke more of a meaning, in a way. Or not. At this point, not openly trading this recording so the taper can get what he can out of it for trading - before someone puts this on some form of file-sharing program, that is.

Source C: DAT --- Core Sound High End Binaurals > Sony PCM-M1
DAT: Master DAT > Digital Clone-1
Notes: Very clear, precise & consistently enjoyable show throughout. Performance wise, Tool seemed to be on top of their game and the crowd seemed to have that same feeling. This show has one of the best versions of Suspicious Minds that I've had the pleasure to hear - super clear. The only issue is that this recording seems to be a little bit soft rather than the rawer live recordings that are so common with Tool. In other words, slightly muted in a way - hard to really describe verbally. Perhaps some will disagree with me but some may hear the same thing. All in all, this could be considered the best sounding recording of this particular show known to be in open trading. And, Lateralus is slightly cut. I will not do another rip of this show from DAT, that would most likely add confusion to this source.

Source D: Mini Disc --- Core Sound Cardioids > Sharp MT-77
Notes: A bit of talking right in the beginning, some microphone checks & the taper & his friends sort of comment about being bumped into and taping. If I remember it correctly, there is a bit of phasing and microphone checks as the taper moves around, positioning his stuff correctly. Although I doubt that collectors would find this to be an extremely wonderful or immaculate recording, the opening segment (intro) is something I find appealing. It sounds very live, raw & surprisingly clear. It is interesting to note that, like the CSB>D100 source, someone says 'I'd like to see security come after us'. But, rest assured these are not the same recordings but the coincidence is sort of uncanny.

Taper: Rawson
Notes: Filmed from off center-left, this recording is a fairly decent capture of Tool. There are a lot of group/band shots with little emphasis on one particular band member; which is rather nice. For fans of Danny's drumming, there are some pretty tasty shots of that. Screens are accurately captured in the background & MJK remains relatively obscured throughout. Sure, a few heads get in the way at time but this particular AUD recording is a hell of a lot better than tons of other shows I have seen. And for some reason, this date of 10.04.01 has a lot of sources for it. Suppose it is fitting that a decent DVD surfaces as well. Very nice. Now, I was told that this is sourced directly from the master Hi8 > DVD but I am a little bit skeptical of that statement - there is a little line at the bottom of the screen that is so common in VHS > DVD transfers. So, verified lineage is not exactly known per se. I do trust the person's information that I got this from though. However, the visuals are slightly grainy but maybe all of this is from the master - I do not know for sure. The audio is actually quite good, almost better than at least one of the MD/AUD sources for this show ;o)
