1998.07.05 - Holmdel, NJ, USA @ PNC Banks Arena (Ozzfest)
Source A: Unknown Video Recording Equipment
Source A: Possibly: Sony CCD-TRV940 Hi8 Video w/ external Sound Professionals mics
Source A: Master > DVD
Notes: Let's see. Not only is this recording brick-walled, has very loud crowd noise & is very distant. this is also an incomplete capture of Tool for whatever reasons. Am thinking that security-ducks were an issue here. The video itself is more back-of-the-head shots than anything else. Close-ups are scarce & very, very shaky. The sound is wavy, very loud on the high end & there is a lack of bass that is noticeable. All in all, this is one definitely for the hard-core collectors. However, to my ears, the sound is a little bit better, overall, than the complete "unknown" version. Perhaps the sever 'collectors only' should not really apply here. The only major issue is that the video moves so rapidly around from here to there. That is probably due to the taper being wary of security.

Source B: Analog --- Core Sound Binaurals > Sony WM-D3
Source B: Master Cassette > CD (2004)
Notes: This is, without a doubt, the actual CSB>D3 source for this show. Hands-down and without even a moments hesitation, this is the best source for this particular performance. It is doubtful that before 2004 the taper had traded it out much as anything other than a guess would be pure speculation. There are numerous instances of the crowd members chatting & talking with one another but I hear the taper saying little, if anything. Hard to control variables such as people talking but it is not really all that bad, what would one expect from an Ozzfest crowd anyway (or a Tool crowd)? the bass hits nicely, the guitar is clean, the drums thump & the vocals are crisp as can be. There are a couple instances of tape-flutter & microphone phasing. Not sure how far the taper was from the stage at this show but it sounds to me to be definitely within pavilion rather than lawn seating due to the clarity of the sound. This is definitely a source + show for any fan's listening pleasure. Not superb but definitely a good recording of a very interesting show.
INCORRECT INFO FLOATING AROUND:
Source B: Unknown Audio Recording
Source B: This is OFTEN labeled incorrectly as: Core Sound Binaurals > Sony WM-D3 ((unverified))
Notes: As of May 2004, there is a pretty big update regarding this source. This almost common & 'unverified source' is now considered a new source. I am certain that this is not a high gen rip of CSB>D3 source or the known + incomplete VHS/DVD source for numerous reasons. One, the sound is much more tinny than the known + incomplete VHS + this source is complete. Two, the verified CSB>D3 source has screaming via the crowd at different times than this does and at totally different times. And three, the overall sound waves/spectrums are very different than the two verified sources.
Notes: This is the full source of this show. Until recently, only the incomplete version which I ripped from VHS
was around in the trading pool. To be honest, it sounds like this recording is sourced either from a cassette source (most likely but not proven) or from a VHS - but the only known video source is incomplete. Which would mean that there would have to be either another source of either filming or a new source for an audio recording. Time will tell. For now, this will have to be a subject to investigate - time will hopefully let us know. There is a tape hiss on this recording that is not as prevalent as on the VHS source. Although a good performance by the band, this show is for collector's only. I don't think anyone else would really want to check it out. This is in a lot of people's collections & the CSB>D3 info is with it..

Source C: Analog Recording --- (unknown microphones) > Sony WM-D6
Taper: Beau Marsh
Gen: ANA-M > WAV > CD-1 > EAC > WAV
Notes: This recording seemed to be plagued by difficulty. Sober is missing; presumably, the taper flipped cassettes after Jimmy & had some technical issue then such as hitting pause instead of record... I don't know, something. Third Eye, unfortunately is incomplete. Truth be said, it appears that the taper walked away from his location (to a restroom perhaps?) to monitor whatever issue he had going on as the sound gets quieter & quieter as he traverses through the crowd during 3rdE. About 5 minutes or so missing, then, after that the taper checks the microphone. As it is, not terrible or anything like that but it does detract from the recording a bit. Technically, it has a few issues with the crowd noise, talking, movement & distance from the stacks, however, it is still a really nice listen.
