2001.08.03 - Denver, CO, USA @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Source A: DAT -- Sound Professionals Premium Slimline Cardioids > Sony TCD-D8
Notes: Very good sound but the crowd is a bit noisy by the taper. Did not seem to very close to the sound-source. With the majority of Tool recording simply sounding good, it is hard to really find any issues with most. This is a recording where I was looking for a comment, it's simply good. Not great, not bad but is a very solid listen, especially for a cardioids recording. All in all, this is a good capture of a mini-tour that some felt to be something like the 2nd coming of Christ or Muhammad or Elvis.

Notes: Nice sound. Deep, rich - like silt on a river bed. However, the bass seems to be slightly heavy and the high end is not as crisp as one would assume it would be in a recording like this. The crowd is rather audible as well - complete with fans singing. Rather noticeable, at least to me, on the Grudge. There are some microphone movement, a little bit of phasing and the taper's hand or something brushing up against the mics. Although not criticisms in anyway, it is relevant that one should make a note of those issues. On the other hand, the recording is a very nice capture of Tool at a rather interesting point in their career. Good performance, good show & a good recording. Not much else to say.

Source C: DAT -- MBHO KA-200 > MBC-603A > Sound Devices MP-2 > Sony SBM-1 > Sony TCD-D100
Notes / 2005: It is official, I have received 4 exact same replications of this show from reputable collector's & 2 of each have been either the MBHO or the Sonic Studios source. This means that both of these sources are questionable. Only a DAT clone would clarify issues or a Master>CD copy. If you have any info, let me know. And, of course, same disc times.
Notes / 2003: The sound on this recording is above average but also seems to be a little distant, perhaps. As such, the recording sounds slightly muted or far away even though it has been reported that the taper was in the 6th row of seating, not lawn. Perhaps the mics were under a tee-shirt or something, I don't know. As it is though, the quality is excellent, the crowd is low while the band is loud (in comparison with crowd noise). Not sure who, exactly, taped this show but other MBHO recordings I have heard are actually better quality than this. I would like to note that I am contrasting this recording to the aforementioned MBHO recordings, for those that know what I am talking about. For those that really are confused & need detailed explanation, please feel free to dial my direct question line: (888) 333-7830 ext. #25 but only US and Canadian's can access this # via a touch-tone phone line.

Source D: Master > DVD
Notes: Hmm. Shame that this video is most commonly available in AVI, MPEG & other downloadable formats as, although the quality is ok, I am quite sure that the -original- form would be a great deal clearer. As of late 2004, I still do not know of any copies of this show on VHS or DVD that are not sourced from this compressed format. The entire show fits on one disc - there is substantial quality loss from the original. But, decent nonetheless. There is a fair amount of crowd noise throughout the recording as people were rather loud & vocal about their appreciation for Tool. Or something like that. For Mini-DV built-in microphones, the taper got pretty good sound out of it, I'm impressed. Shot from the center-right of the Arena, the taper had a rather steady hand & got some very nice close-ups of all the band members, individually, as well as the band members + the screen. Interesting stuff. Not sure why the taper seemed to focus on MJK - in his Speedos. That was kind of odd. Let's see, the crowd kind of sucked where this taper was sitting. At one point, during AEnima, someone yells "you fag" to MJK, I assume. Also, about 6:36 minutes into the recording, on the Grudge, you can hear some guy in the crowd say "look at the bootlegger". Kind of funny.
