2002.10.10 - Rapid City, SD, USA @ Rushmore Plaza Civic Center
Source A: DAT --- MBHO ka200n> MBHO Actives > JK Labs DVC V-12 > Sony PCM-M1
Taper: Billy
DAT Gen: DAT-1 > Digital Clone-2
CD Gen: 1st from Master
Notes: Great, I mean great recording. Levels are just right & the crowd is so low its hard to hear that they are even really there at all. Which is nice. Standard show for Tool, standard setlist but still a good show, performance wise. Nothing really totally different but this does stand proof that no matter where Tool goes, they can put on one hell of a solid show. Also, it seems as though the taper stood very close to the speaker...crystal clear. With some recordings, the bass can flood the recording & make it very thick - like maple syrup. Not here. You get what you pay for with the equipment you use, it seems. One of the better 2002 recordings. Setlist is quite basic and standard as is the overall performance but I think that this recording makes even something that may, at times, be almost mundane be instead superb. That says something, I think. Some of the more adept collector's will notice that there is a slightly different sound on disc two. Why? The AUD DAT had an issue and that section of the show was spliced in it's stead. All copies have this commonality. Fact is, a 2G DAT recording I have of this show has the same issue. That really does not make sense - it must be that someone took this from CD or potentially WAV > DAT. Taking a guess as I trust the person I attained the DAT from. Was unable to acquire a DAT Clone from the taper, unfortunately. Would be interesting to solve this mystery.
Note: There are two IEM versions of this performance: both solo as a source and as combined with this MBHO source.

Taper: DP
Gen: 1st from Master
Notes: Recorded front of the sound board, the taper hits the sweet-spot. This recording is very heavy in the overall tonality, if that makes any sense. Rather intense, when you hear this recording it sounds very much like you are there. A little bit of crowd noise but, hey, it is to be expected. Not terrible but there are a few instances of annoyance to listening pleasure. Tool seems to be simply going through the emotions at this show, in a way. Yeah, they are rocking out & delivering a solid performance & whatnot but... it could be just me but it seems a little forced. Maybe forced is the wrong word... rehearsed. However, this performance gives ample evidence that wherever Tool goes, they do put on one hell of a show. It is note-worthy that, right before AEnima, a couple people really want to hear an un-released Tool song...I have never heard it...it is, apparently, entitled "Swim". If you have any idea please, oh please, let me know ;o)
