2001.08.15 - San Diego, CA, USA @ SDSU Theatre
Source A: DAT --- Sound Pro Slimline Cardioids > Sony TCD-D100
Taper: Mason D.
Gen: 1st from Master
Notes: Excellent source for this performance as the recording is crystal clear & very nice. I think the sound of Cardioids is a nice element for recordings sometimes. this is one of those times. The taper was not right by the stacks but an excellent recording was created. It seems that many European tapers (exception of the UK) use Cardioids more than they use Binaurals. In the US, Binaurals are used more. I think it's because the Europeans tend to have big outdoor festivals whereas we have more indoor places. Taking a guess. Anyway, this is a very nice capture of Tool. Probably the best version of this performance available.
Notes: Features a girl yelling "I love - I fucking love you, fuck-my-shit I love you!!!"

Source B: DAT --- Danish Pro Audio 4061s > Sony PCM-M1
Notes: This is a very nice capture of Tool performing at the peak of their 2001 era. I think. The sound is clear and is well balanced but is not as amazing as one would think for the equipment used. All in all though, a very nice recording. Although the taper seems to be close to the speakers, this is the clearest, in my opinion, of the west coast tour even though the crowd can be rather loud & annoying. MJK's vocals are very clear & the other instruments compliment each other rather nicely. I am sure that people will disagree with me and they are free to. The setlist is a very basic one for this time period as is the performance - straight, forward and narrow. But, what else could one expect or want more of? My comment definitely lays with the shrieking girls --> please, please, please do not do that again! One more thing, this taper seemed to be rather close to the SPSC>D100 taper as some of the screams are the same... but, they are different recordings.

Source C: Mini Disc --- Sony ECM-Z590 > Sharp MT-821
Notes: There is a bit of microphone movement/touching & assorted noise during the Tuva intro on this source. Is this a big deal? Nah.... but does it give an indication of the overall type of recording this source will be? Yeah. There is a layer of bass &, at times, a bit of crowd noise that, although completely tolerable is not exactly the most pleasant of sources of this recording available. This is, however, a rather nice recording. There are some DAT recordings that are not as clean as this is. Suppose you can say that about virtually anything but I think ti says something about the caliber of recording this is, if you look at it from that angle. Recommend? Yeah.
Maynardism:
"I'm assuming, of course, that you were wise enough to show up early for King Crimson. Those of you that didn't should have to pay twice."
