Notes on The Sylvia Massy Outtakes:
In November 2020, Sylvia Massy, the recording engineer for Tool on both Opiate and Undertow, offered a bunch of old memorabilia of Tool for sale on her website with a solid focus seemingly on audio cassettes, DATs and even reel-to-reel consisting of studio outtakes. These items were not remotely cheap as in thousands and thousands of dollars. Unsurprisingly, her store quickly sold out of most everything rather quickly. Unsure of the legality of selling something like that but she did have a note specifying that the only thing for sale were the physical tapes and not the information contained on them. To complicate things, apparently, she was trying to sell the physical Master (Reel to Reel tape) of Undertow. To be clear and without a shadow of a doubt: Sylvia Massy has transfers of every single thing she sold but it is also true that there is no incentive for her to release anything pertaining to Tool in the short or long term.
Notes:
First and foremost, there are at minimal three transfers of this: Sylvia Massy, cu.org and the individual who I traded with to ascertain. I am a sucker for physical media what can I say? Many collectors view only the information collected on the physical masters, whatever format be it VHS, DVD, Solid State, Analog or DAT as important which is true, however, there is something cool about having a DAT tape which was actually in the studio. This is why pictures are available for these tapes. This has been floating around friends and fans of TDP Since at least 2020. There is a pervasive and repeating ‘click’ sound which in actuality is most likely an issue with tape degrade than anything else as it is not something an engineer would want during a recording session. It is minor but worth noting. There are several minutes of silence which is somewhat of a bummer.
DAT Tape Time: 49:56
DC: (barely audible)
MJK: What do you mean by that? He is? What happened to the Got Boys? Why? He’s the best thing about that band. He’s awesome. We were going out with the same girl at the same time. Hated each other. Didn’t ever meet until he played here in LA and I said hey aren’t you so and so and he was like yeah aren’t you so and so… He said, let’s have a beer. Now that girl’s like married, tattooed, dreadlocks, two kids… riding a motorcycle around Kalamazoo. Not even she’s just fat. At least she’s not drunk. Hear that Adam? I said fat and Paul goes ‘just your type’ but at least she’s not drunk. You like that didn’t you. From the Bottom… From the Bottom.

MJK: “Plgh. Tune.”
DC: “I thought the tempo was fine on those parts, I don’t think it was very different, either.
MJK: What’s the end?”
DC: Were you talking about the slow parts or what?
Adam: (inaudible)
MJK: All the spoken, all the spoken stuff. We’ll do it again but we’ll listen to that one because I think it sounded pretty cool.
DC: I thought the breakdown of the song was…
MJK: For what for guitar? You need something Adam? You wanna talk to me? Why?
Adam: Well, I’ll tell you why. Um, I’m going to drop out during that part.
MJK: What? Can’t hear him.
Adam: I’m going to drop out during that part.
MJK: What part?
Adam: Where you speak and I’m going to tune.
MJK: Totally. Hate to put a lot of pressure on you guys but that’s not the kind of song I can sing like six times in a row. Why don’t you guys just nail this one right here OK? No pressure or anything. Tick tock tick tock. But I love you and love is money. Money is love is God is money is God is money is God is love is God is money. Godoggodogodogodogodogodogodo
