Source A: Mini Disc --- Core Sound Binaurals > Denecke AD-20 > Sony MZ R-700
Taper: Armen <Zh'ian Osatch>
Gen: 1st from Master
Notes: Great sounding recording for a powerful gig; the second to last show of the Lateralus tour. This particular recording is very clean, crisp & clear but has a hint of hall-e sound to it, in a way. I am pretty sure he was sitting in the upper balcony so the recording is not as. Crowd is very low and does not overpower the recording at all - surprising, as I've heard loads of DATs taped at approximately the same locale that do not hold up even half as well as this taper's set-up does. Nice. Tool seems to be not only in a good mood, probably happy to be done touring, but also seems to be...um...playing it up a little bit since this is one of the shows which they were taping for a future DVD release. So, imagine that, they played really, really well tonight - lots of energy. Maynard, especially, seems to be rather cheeky and talkative, compared with other shows this tour. For the collector's or people that really are into the -entire concert experience-, the post-show is one not to be missed. Amusing, for sure. For those that enjoy humor, take a good listen to the post-show...
Maynardism: "Good evening Reno. Are you ready to have some fun? Well, let me clarify what we mean by fun. Not the WWF, Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock kind of fun. Not the MTV dry-humping, effects gone wild beach party kind of fun. Because we are not going to underestimate your intelligence. We're gonna have intelligent fun, compassionate fun, think-for-yourself-question-authority kind of fun. The kind of fun that drives Republicans crazy. Lots of fun. Are you ready?"

Notes: The second to last show of the Lateralus tour. And a very nice audience capture of the performance is exemplified by this source. The levels are very nice & the overall product is completely listenable... this is surprising when one considers the rather basic recording equipment used. The taper did pull it off though, rather nicely at that. Are there superior sources available? Yes. But is this still an enjoyable recording? Yes. All in all, this is a nice capture of a very pleasant performance. Tool seems to be on the verge of energy but also exhaustion.

Notes: Very nice recording. The taper seemed to have some luck with not being by a bunch of screaming people, always good. The vocals, guitar and drums are very clear. But, if you listen, the bass can be a little much sometimes. I tested this in my car w/my 12" box (the acid test) & the bass just flooded. But, that minor issue is one that many people will not notice. On headphones, it is very hard to tell. All in all, good recording of a good show. Not much more to say. Tool seems to be on the verge of energy but also exhaustion.
Notes Added by: Ricky 2004:
After I heard the rendition of Third Eye this night, I instantly and still believe this is the greatest Third eye performance ever. Tool this night, but on an intro to Third eye that should never be overlooked. It seems everlasting, there is new nuance to the guitar, bass , and drumming. While the average conditioned listener might consider it to be sheer noise. I find it to be the musical manifestation of "shock and awe." The rest of the song is delivered in powerful fashion, 20 minutes well spent.

Notes: The second to last show of the Lateralus tour. Tool seemed to rather tight & MJK seemed to be in a rather talkative mood, in a way. Although they didn't really stretch the boundaries of what they could've possibly done to commemorate such a night, a very solid performance was created. Filmed from the back, left of the arena, this is a pretty good film-job. The sound is pretty good as well but is a little distant. There are some instances of less than ideal workmanship but that is not a big deal at all. It is par for the course. This features some rather nice editing of the screen shots & the band performing as well as some good close-ups. But, overall, you are seeing the stage & the screens rather than an intense close-up of a band member. But that is ok. All in all, this is mandatory if you were at the show & want to relive it but not a bad idea to pick up if you just want to sit back, relax & watch a nice recording.
