2017.05.24 - Fairfax, VA, USA @ Eaglebank Arena

Source: Solid State — Church Audio 11 > Tascam DR-05
Taper: opsopcopolis

Notes: By all measures, this is a solid recording with a few outliers which make it even better than other sources/dates from this tour leg. One, MJK’s vocals are clean and up front in the mix something which is oft hidden for various (un) intentional reasons, at times. Guitar is right up in the bright mix, DC’s percussion holds the band down as Adam lays the low end. If one were to complain, a valid issue could be a perception that the audio is very thin - thin like fat free cheese. Absolutely the right microphones to choose for a venue such as this by the taper, nice job.

Notes by Taper :Good setlist, wished they had played Eulogy :-( but other than that really happy with the set. A lot of crowd chatter in the beginning. I tried moving around but seemed to be the same. Maynard seemed to be in a good mood. I didnt even get patted down by security which blew my mind for being at a Tool show. Managed to get some pictures real quick. I made up the artwork and its included. Enjoy and please DONT SELL!!!!!!! I really dont care what you do with it but dont sell it.

2017.05.30 - Rochester, NY, USA @ Blue Cross Arena

Source: Solid State — MBHO KA 200N > Sony PCM-M10
Taper: Toaster

Notes by taper: Recorded from section 217. I had to flick the gain switch on the tinybox after The Grudge to medium from low as i was peaking out at around -16db. I adjusted the levels up on that song as well as i could to match the rest of the show. That’s what the weird level correction thing is in the crowd noise between songs.
Notes: Perhaps the question is, does this taper ever fasil to nail a recording? My subjective opinion is, no, he does not. Although I’ve not ever been to this venue, from what a friend told me it is a smaller venue which sounds like a barn creaking in a wind storm; his words not mine. As it, Toaster nailed this performance as best he could based particularly from his position which was clearly not Front of Stack or super near hanging PA’s. As it is, vocals are tight in the mix, volume and levels of instrumentals are consistent throughout the recording. Excellent job to the taper.

This was a bootleg poster some dude was attempting to sell outside the venue. I took one look at it and thought he would be shut down momentarily. I took a walk down to the underground parking structure to check for Interesting Earthly Magnets and when I came back the guy was gone, the posters were ripped in half in a trash except for this one which was mounted to a piece of cardboard. Other than some bends, decent free bootleg poster and interesting story.

2024 Notes: Originally, we did not even plan on taping but decided at the last moment figured to just go big or go home and brought in the mics and M10. Since that time, this source just sat until I remastered the audio in preparation for eventual release. This source required some EQ’ing in order to find those vocals in the mix but it worked out well. Great performance and awesome setlist. The 2017 Tool shows we were able to hit stand out in my mind as just rock solid performances, which they were. This is no exception.

Notes: I recall this trip from Michigan to Hamilton, Ontario quite fondly even though it took me two hours to cross into Canada. As I finally made it to the security, the officer asked me where I lived, what I did for a living and if my SUV was paid off (it was). Thought it was a strange question to ask. Few hours later, made it to Hamilton around 3:00PM and located the venue. I was literally walking around trying to find the box office when a security with the venue told me to scram until doors. I politely told him I’m free to walk where I want to and he proceeded to explain to me that there was a considerable amount of paranoia about shootings or violence (Note: this was maybe two weeks after the bombing in Manchester, England at an Ariana Grande concert) so I told him I understood. Ended up underneath the venue for a few as I could hear both the soundcheck with MJK and the VIP soundcheck without MJK. Was cool to hear Eulogy as they only performed it once live in 2017 if memory serves me correctly. Found a local Pub and grabbed dinner before the show.

The show itself was great. I went in at doors and ended up being caught up in a surprisingly thorough pat-down from one security then passed to a supervisor then to an armed police officer which was not super fun but got inside with plenty of time to find my seat and secure a spot at the Sports bar to watch soccer and have a cold beer. Roughly twenty minutes prior to the show I left my spot, went to the bathroom to set everything up and went to my seat which was stage-left roughly mid-way on lower bowl which was fine as the speakers were pointed right at me actually. Solid performance by Tool of somewhat of a standard set for 2017. Any performance with Third Eye in it is immediately one of my favorite Tool performances. Such a great song, never gets old. The reason the recorded time is so long on Source A reflects both pre and post show. Using solid state recorders are so easy when compared with DAT.

Taper: Bobcat

Notes:
Recorded from 5th row, dead center. Unfortunately, the bass is a bit muddy throughout this otherwise clear show. IT sounds to me that the PA was a bit too hot for the microphone setting on the recorder or the AT’s could not handle the SPL blowing down at it from Tool’s stage presence and music. Otherwise, this is a pretty solid recording it’s just when that bass hits, it hits hard.

Notes: All known varieties of this particular recording are sourced from a YouTube recording (long ago deleted unless someone reuploaded it). Although the audio quality is, arguably, pretty good if not decent there is just issues with it which collectors’ should not have to be worrying about in 2017 or later. As far as CU.ORG can determine, this is the only source of this performance which is surprising seeing as how, years ago, there was a taper talking about how he pulled an ‘incredible’ recording of this show with a CSB rig. We shall see if anything ever becomes of that. For this source, being what it is, lossy, no real information anywhere and a lack of consistency, I would put this into the best left for collectors column.

2024 Notes: Security is always rather abrasive at Pine Knob (then known as DTE Energy Music Amphitheater, the venue was Pine Knob from it’s inception until DTE paid a ton of money for the naming rights for 11 years turning back to Pine Knob in 2022, but I digress) and this evening was no exception. Thus, we decided on bringing in CSB microphones (with the metal housing for the 9V which always sets off metal detectors) for the sport of it. Also, to sort of compare from the same recording unit, Sony PCM-M10, between CSB this evening and the DPA 4061 used a week prior in Hamilton, Ontario (with the plastic housing which does not set off metal detectors). Maybe not surprisingly, the DPA4061 mics deliver a deeper sound but I must give it up for team CSB; they hold their own even though the bass has a bit of flutter to it. That said, CSB mics, at least the batch that Len released in 2002, were among the highest caliber. That said. as I was reminded, I am hyper critical of stuff pulled by The Collective. Other people, besides myself, that have heard this source dig it. With some EQ and fresh ears, this was reevaluated in 2024 and it really did turn out pretty sweet. Well, you be the judge.

Notes: My good buddy and longtime member of The Collective, RJB AKA Anon, made the journey from Buffalo, NY to hit this Tool show with me. This venue, Pine Knob (it’s always been Pine Knob, always will be) is rather close to where I live so anytime I have an opportunity to see a fun concert at this wonderful amphitheater, I usually take it when possible. Add Tool into the mix, no way I’d miss this show. The tickets for this 15,040 capacity venue sold out instantly as a lot of shows at this venue tend to do. It is often irritating as more than once I’ve been shut-out. But not for Tool; I managed to get great tickets from Ticketmaster’s on sale date. That was it. No dynamic pricing or upcharges, just got really lucky and nailed a fantastic pair. MJK was in his police riot gear outfit which was amusing. The performance was flawless and something different than most of the performances on this tour, a debut of The Pot which was the first performance since I believe 2012. There is an Interesting and Eclectic Man who believes that there is at least another source of this show somewhere in the Metaverse who also reports that the 3 hour time for this AUD source is the entire time of the file - who knows what riotous or scandalous information was discussed?

Notes by Taper: Ironically, this was my first time seeing Tool live. Every time beforehand I was either not in the area, or had some other commitment. A good friend hooked me up with a ticket, SO BIG THANKS TO THEM! :) We sat absolute dead center about 15 rows back. It was ridiculous. The lights… The sound… Maynard coming out in full riot gear. I’ve been told that Maynard is usually not talkative, but he did say a few things throughout the night. “Great to be home.” The set was solid, and I am glad to have made the show. Traffic is always bad getting to DTE. And we were in our seats with 10 minutes before the went on. Sound was good from where we sat and I think the recording came out pretty well. Enjoy if you grab it.

Notes: For such a basic recording setup circa 2017, this CSB source is quite pleasant and being the only known recording to circulate it also make this source the best sounding of any sources available. Bass is leveled decent, guitar is clean, bass and snare sound clear. Audio-wise, the vocals are somewhat buried but perhaps it is more of a standard complaint. The cymbals are somewhat sloshy and the crowd is clearly evident, throughout. This source is not a Front of Stack type of omni recording but is more of an ambient capture of the band.

Notes by LeifH as the taper borrowed his gear to record this performance:
I was in Amsterdam at the time of this concert. I was able to lend some gear to a fan who wanted a recording of the show. This was their first time recording a concert. It turned out really good, however they were heavily intoxicated and there are some moments where they get a little over excited about their experience. They were row 13 on the floor, in line with the right stacks. Maynard references the Trailer Park Boys during Opiate and speaks a few times in regards to politics. Danny Carey's drum & synth solo is a highlight. The Pot is tuned to C instead of D which is how they've done it in more recent years. The Crystal Method was the support act, and they also did a club show at Venue later the same night.

2017.06.17 - George, WA, USA @ The Gorge

Source: Solid State — Zoom Q3HD (internal microphones)
Taper: Meddlearth

Notes by Taper A: Recorded from 8th row. All too evident as first few minutes include walking in front of stage to inner aisle getting help finding seat from multiple people. At one point along that stretch I was mere feet from Justin, recording away.
Notes by CU.ORG: What is both appreciated and somewhat surprising is the clarity of this particular source. Crowd noise is a relevant issue throughout but, wow, for a little all-in-one with built-in microphones this is a great recording. I do think that a proper recording level by the taper comes to play here. The best comparison would be a decent Cardioid recording. The bass sort of rolls-off, it is present but you hear it rather than feel it in an Omni recording. Vocals are crisp in the mix and one could argue it would have ALD-like features but this is clearly an AUD recording. The position of the taper is extremely relevant to the overall quality of this recording.

Solid State — Olympus

Notes: Thick, ambient-like crowd chatter, comments, screams, whoops, yells add a pervasive layer of noise unrequested by the listener throughout this thin recording. There is no distortion, the recording simply sounds a bit distant much akin to a Cardioid recording which is quite nice as many fantastic recordings are Cardioid based (they should also be part of any tapers bag of trips, oop, I meant tricks). Listening to this is like ordering a turkey sandwich, taking a bite and then realize that the deli replaced your choice of meat with an uncooked piece of soy. That is, every time the recording is clear from a massive scream by someone close or the taper, that whoop or ‘there we go’ pop up again.

Taper:
jcrab66

Notes: Jcrab66 now that was not an online moniker I’ve heard in quite a while, not since 2007 in Las Vegas. As it is, this source is quite good and absolutely above average. It does suffer from being a bit of distance away from the PA’s although the crowd noise is for the most part at a minimal. MJK’s vocals are somewhat muddied in the mix but this is a common complaint both at a Tool show and the recordings thereafter. As it is, solid recording all around and it would be somewhat surprising if this taper did not have at least another source, somewhere. By far, this is the best version of this recording available - we are all lucky that it is of such high quality.

Notes: Very nicely balanced recording of one of the last shows from 2017. This is a taping environment where Schoeps microphones really can shine; in less than ideal taping conditions. Crowd chatter is more or less kept at a minimum throughout whereas the sound captured from the PA’s is as clean a capture as possible. You certainly do get what you pay for with microphones. Tool, at this point, were road-weary but tight as at any point in their career. Definitely an ambient recording this is also one of the best of 2017 even though the vocals are consistently muddy throughout this recording but this is more of a mixing issue, at times.

Notes by Taper: Tool at the top of their game, and I was perfectly centered just two rows in front of soundboard. Had it not been my first time at this venue, I would've known to bring my video gear. With 56 seat rows, sitting 28 deep, security was way far away. I also would've known to not mount windscreens on my mics. Sitting down low, in the middle, turns out there was no wind. While I regret not capturing video and using free air mics, happy to come away with recording that's still not half bad.
