2001.10.01 - New York City, NY, USA @ Madison Square Garden
Source A: DAT --- Sound Professionals Premium Slimline Cardioids > Sony TCD-D8
Notes: This recording is slightly (slightly) brickwalled when the bass really hits & sort of crunches and is also an incomplete recording as the Grudge is missing. Other than that, recording is rather clean and without major flaws. Potentially, this is one of the better recordings of this performance. On the other hand, the fact that the Grudge is missing for whatever reason is rather disappointing. Have heard other people exclaim that this is just a great performance. I think so too. Not stunning or exceptional but at least above average. Remember when this show occurred, first time Tool hit New York since the attacks on 9/11. The first performance and the performance the night after this have, to me at least, the same energy or vibe that was picked up on 09.13 show & a few shows after. Listen for yourself though, don't take my word for it.

Source B: Mini Disc --- Sony ECM-DS70P > Sharp MT-821
Taper: Jared D.
Gen: 1st from Master
Notes: Although this was taped from the pit and has its moments of being quite loud with talking, high pitched screaming and crowd talking/singing; it still sounds quite good. It seems as though the crowd is pushing up against one another as the microphones get hit and moves...a few mini-disc skips as well from getting hit. This is, perhaps, a bit less professional than some of the taper's other works but is a good recording. Levels are nice and, somehow, are not distorted although the bass comes very close a few times. Considering the location of taping; a nice product. For what its worth, this is more of a 'live' sound recording rather than an astounding 'quality' recording... if that makes sense. This recording was equalized & the taper did some other things to this recording to get the sound more balanced. There is an un-mastered version that the taper gave to me, has slightly different track times.

Source C: Analog --- Aiwa CM-30 > Sony WM-D6
Notes: Let's see. I think that this source is probably the clearest, cleanest, tightest and best sounding recording of this particular performance to yet surface. And, for those old schoolers, it is on analog nonetheless. How about that? The other tapers of this show are using MD's, MiniDV's and other stuff but yet the best sounding version uses technology that is decades old. How about that? I don't have anything else to say but this should be in your collection. To the person who taped this: nice one : excellent performance with an excellent capture.

Notes: I purchased this source from the taper on eBay about a week after the show was. This was not recorded by Rawson. The filmer did not disclose what he used to record this show.
Notes: The sound is a bit 'tinny' & not as good as it should be & is best left for collector's. A fair amount of talking by not just the friends of the taper but also the taper as well. Plus, the filmer was rather unfocused in his attention to the matter at hand.... what close-ups there are, are captures of interest but, for God's sake, the filmer needs some ritalin. However, with a setlist like this, for a 2001 show, makes it totally worthwhile and perhaps I was just a little irritated as I do not make it a habit for purchasing Tool recordings. Ah well, people who sell suck + give taper's a bad name, please do not sell. Please. The grudge is semi-cut as it seems the filmer is a novice but everything else is complete. Interesting but not great. Making your way through the intermission is a chore in and of itself... so much talking. Uh.
Maynardism: "Hopefully, we'll see some of you tomorrow. Please be careful going home, look out for your brother & sister. Get home safely. We'd like to leave you with a thought. We'd like you to remember this feeling your having whether its good, bad or indifferent, remember this feeling you're having & take it home. And in the coming weeks, create something positive with it"
