2002.11.19 - Phoenix, AZ, USA @ America West Arena
Source A: Mini Disc --- Core Sound Binaurals > Sony MZ-R55
Taper: Jeff S.
Gen: 1st from Master
Notes: This is one of my favorite recordings from 2002. I don't really know why but the quality just really captures Tool live better than many. There are no brick walls nor any sort of sonic issues; just a real good recording that many attempt to reach but few actually do. The taper stood a little to the left center but ahead of the sound board. The version of Third Eye on this recording is one not to be missed. To top it all off, Tool was playing so good this night that you can literally close your eyes & -boom- you are there. Well, not rally but you know what I mean. Also, this source as well as source B have the same disc times. It is odd but I assure you they are different sources. First time I've ever seen that happen though. Interesting.
Notes: Alt. ending of Stinkfist. Not sure how many versions have this as of Dec. 3, 2002. Right at the end, Maynard sings: "take my hand, take my hand, take my hand". Interesting, he did that for some of the latter fall 2002 shows.
Maynardism:
"Phoenix. You don't sound so sure. I assume you here to have fun. Allow us to clarify what kind of fun. Not the WWF Monster Truck Rally kind of fun, not the Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock -- Cool Party kind of fun...because here... we are not going to underestimate your intelligence. The fun we are going to have tonight is the intelligent kind of fun, the compassionate kind of fun, the think-for-yourself, question-authority kind of fun. The kind of fun that drives Republicans nuts -- the dangerous fun. Are you ready?"
Maynardism:
"We are recording tonight, so you may want to make some more noise than that."

Notes: Pretty good recording but it is a little bit muffled when compared with other '02 recordings. Maybe it is the Sony ECM's, I don't know. Microphone limitations are prevalent. The crowd has a little bit of presence not really associated with recordings these days but isn't really all that bad or noticeable if you don't look for it like some people, like myself, may. There are quite a few hoots + hollers but, again, I'm sort of picking at straws. I can say that Third Eye is slightly overly loud & the crowd really, really gets into screaming at this point. Overall, this is a decent enough recording. This source has primarily been traded via SHN, then to CD, then to other traders. Not sure if this is SHN or not - seems like it may as I haven't seen any other discs floating around of this show that are not from SHN. Also, Jeff's recording has the same time as disc #1 of this show but they are not the same source. It is a little confusing & odd but these things tend to happen every once & again.

Notes: Filmed from the right & rather far back, the filmer did his best to capture a basic Tool performance. There are some very nice close ups of all the band members & also some very nice screen shots. Some screen shots are mixed into the recording so, on occasions when the filmer had to duck or move the camera out of sight, a screen shot is super-imposed. Pretty cool. Not going to kid you, I've seen better quality filming than this particular show but this is a very nice recording and many people will get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Tool was very tight this night as well, playing a rather standard setlist but changing it up -just enough- to keep some hardcore fans on their toes.
