2001.10.16 - Nashville, TN, USA @ Municipal Auditorium
Source: DAT --- Core Sound Binaurals > Sony PCM-M1
DAT: DAT-M > DAT-1
CD: 1G from Taper, Transferred in 2001
Taper: Travis
Notes:
Very good sound, probably the best of Travis's 2001 Tool recordings. I think he must have been a bit closer to the stacks than he had been at previous nights shows, so the sound is just a little bit fuller & more 'there'. Maybe it is just me but I really, really like the way CSBs sound as a microphone source for a Tool recording. Hard to get a bad one. A little different spice to the setlist than what Tool had been doing this part of the tour, so that is nice as well. Note, Stinkfist is not played this night. Performance by the band is simply rock-solid as usual but this night they seem to really be having fun. There is already a good DAT>CD transfer, I will not do another one as that would simply add confusion.

Notes: Rather low crowd noise, the taper seemed to either know what he or she was doing or got very lucky. This has, on been kind of hard to find in a way due to some reason or another. This recording features a rather interesting change to the setlist, Sober in lieu of Stinkfist. And, take note, this version of Sober has the "I want, what I want" scream at the end. Interesting. Gives the song a different layer of meaning? Maybe, maybe not. The taper was a good deal of distance away from the stacks as this recording is kind of quiet. The sound is kind of attenuated, if that makes any sense to you. All in all, an accurate capture of Tool's performance this night but there are some rather audible disabilities re: this performance that I find rather hard to get over. The compression of the ATRAC MD is more noticeable to me on this recording than other recordings, not sure why. Mayne this is more of a preference, I do not really like the sound of the Sound Pro Binaurals. To each his or her own.

'Thank you. Thank you very much. Please, on your way home look out for each other, get home safely. And while you're traveling and you are reminiscing about tonight, about our moment, try to hang onto that feeling you have whether you've had a good night, a bad night, an indifferent night, it doesn't matter, remember this feeling you're having and in the coming weeks use that feeling to create something positive.'

Notes: Performance exceeds expectations whereas the video recording itself is a bit below average. Very shaky at times mixed with a few security ducks lead one to believe that the taper was off of his ADHD medication. Nah, the video is really not all that bad. In fact, the audio is really very good considering it is sourced from a video. Very clear. The audio does not have the depth of say a decent DAT recording but more like a fairly good mini disc recording, if that makes sense to you. Although there are some high-points, the majority of the recording would most likely be appreciated best by a collector. There are quite a bit of steady shots and quality close-ups but the video itself has a few occasions where the video sputters (blue screen / static fuzz). This apparently is on the master at around 39 minutes. All in all, better than nothing - at least this is a complete recording. I think that the collector will view this video as more like a representation of the band's performance rather than a classic capture of Tool. And for that last reason, I would recommend this.
