2018 Note: In 2018 (as well as some of 2017), the instrumental portion of Tool held ‘clinics’ which were apparently all the rage to attend; sadly I did not for various rationale. The ‘clinics’ were a chance for Tool fans to have somewhat of an extended VIP experience but in a smaller setting. If memory serves, the cost was roughly $500+ per person with a total time of maybe two hours including the instrumentality portion of Tool, a look around past guitars, bass and drum parts (museum) and opportunity to buy merchandise. For all ‘clinics’, there was zero MJK involvement, to be clear. There are only three known clinic recordings; one is of nasty quality as it is a Sony PCM-M10 from someone’s pocket (but it is complete with Q & A) and one of the others is a scanner-sourced IEM recorded from outside by none other than my departed friend and legend, Nameloc01. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Source: This is a fantastic example of omni microphones used correctly in the setting, in a position that they exceed at particularly DPA mics. Recorded somewhat close to the stack thus the instrumentation is clean and in-your-face, MJK’s vocals are, sadly, buried like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow of me ole Lucky Charms. I am sure that someone, somewhere, had a trusty Sennhesier G3 around at the time to get a more accurate capture of the vox but at least we have a solid, clear, clean and enjoyable recording. Myself, having been to this stadium/venue/Festival times before, this taper must’ve been just sapped of energy by the time Tool came on stage. That’s all I’m saying. And hey, great recording of a tight performance and the only second whole-band performance of 2018.
