2001.09.08 - Noblesville, IN, USA @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre

Source A: Mini Disc --- Radioshack Lavalier Omni-directional > Sony MZ-R700
Transfer: MD-M > Tascam MD 301 MK-II > UXL24/96 > Goldwave
Taping Position: Smack dab in the middle of the lawn with relatively high winds
Taper: Galen
Gen: collectiveunconscious.org Master Recording

2024 Notes: There is a lot of phasing in this recording mixed with a whole lot of crowd participation throughout. A plethora, if you will. We were on the lawn and it was windy so gusts of wind mixed with cheap microphones generally do not yield amazing results although there are times where you can be like ‘this is not so bad’ until some chick screams ‘whhhoooo’ next to the microphones. It is what it is, this was a pre-911 Tool concert, second to the last, actually. Decided to keep the Charlevoix-crew post-show just as part of the recording because, why not, it was over 24+ years ago. There may be some bad language and an old friend of mine saying he ‘saw’ MJK’s dick onstage, but he did not. As it is, worth the work to get this recording to sound slightly better than the OG transfer.

2001 Notes: First things first, this is probably the most un-professional of my released Tool recordings. A fair amount of crowd noise & talking combined with a less than desirable taping location (middle of lawn) = a 'decent enough recording'. Really, you could argue that this could be best left for collectors. Really, the people who most get a kick out of this are myself & the friends who I gave it to who were standing around me. At one time, you can hear one of my friends hand me a Jibber & say "hurry up & hit it before it goes out" --- yeah, very professional.  Plus, for those that care, my friends & I were passing buddha throughout the show - non-stop. If you know what I mean. Although definitely listenable, it's really best left for collector's. But, this was one of the most fun I've had at a concert. Nothing like a little road trip. Drove from East Lansing, MI, USA about 6 hours to just north of Indianapolis, IN with a couple buddies. Stories, stories, stories...certainly not fit fort his forum. Many, many spiffs were roached during the show; being on the lawn, who cared? Sound is slightly distant and a fair amount of crowd noise. Also is the post-show which is actually kind of funny; not music but the 40 minutes of just dazed confusion after an intense show. Standing outside the gates waiting for a friend & chattering included seeing a 15-16 year old girl making out with a guy in his 30's (moustache, mullet & probably drives a Chevy camaro), a guy yelling 'stiffler --- hey, Nick Stifler' for about 20 minutes before he sulked away (lost his ride home), a young man pass out whilst having a seizure as security whisked him and his petrified girl away, a girl who I went to University with Pregnant and a few other oddities including a guy I know reporting that he saw "Maynard's penis" during the gig. The post-show still makes me laugh...

Source B:  DAT --- Core Sound Binaurals > Sony PCM-M1

Notes:
Recording it is a little far-away sounding (being taped from the lawn) & has a bit of crowd noise. I don't think that this, really, any real good recordings came from this gig. The venue is this huge amphitheatre which is, majority-wise, a big lawn. There is a fair amount of crowd talking, yelling & pushing - but what do you expect from such a crap taping location? This is not Smagmapig's version --- this CSB>M1 & the CSB>M1(oade) have been confused for years! There is also a video source, which is a bit choppy but quite good in visual clarity, when it is not moving. Filmed from the lawn on the right hand side. No idea where the taper of the audio was.

Notes:
This source is definitely the clearest, sharpest, cleanest and overall best recording of this show that I have either heard or know of.  I am unsure of where this was recorded from, taking a guess it sounds to be taped from somewhere in the pavilion or, if not, taped as close to the speakers from the lawn as possible. The crowd is very lively, quite loud but this source has the least obtrusive crowd-noise in comparison with the other sources out there. Very nice, actually. This is a pleasure to listen to and enjoy. Tool was playing a good show this night & this recording, unlike others, seems to pick that up a bit better than others. Hats off to the taper. This source and the CSB>M1 (non-Oade Mod) source have been rampantly confused. From what I understand, this source is quite a bit harder to find than any of the other sources, including mine. Until I attained this on DAT, I did not know which was which. So, be careful and know what you are getting. This source has an added bonus, there is an amazingly -annoying- female shrieking throughout the entire gig which is noticeable on the left channel... that is the only possible issue but may also be a good differentiation between the two sources.

Notes:
Filmed from the right side of the venue on the lawn, this recording is pretty far away from the stage but is very clear & focuses a lot on Danny, Justin & Maynard (Adam is out of view). Actually, some great close-ups of Danny, who usually gets overlooked in the live recordings of Tool. Definitely one to get if you like to watch Danny's drumming & see what he does. I was at this show so I just pop it in while I'm doing stuff to 'embrace the moments again' (yeah, real fucking cheesy). As for overall, quality, forever & lifetime enjoyment is this the best live recording/filiming job ever? No. To boot, the sound quality is well below average. However, this is at least decent but the heads & shaking of the camera may get to many people. As it is, this would most likely be worth it if you wanted to just relax & have a Tool video on as you do housework or something like that. But, honestly, I do not see most people watching this video with an enthralled gleam in their eye, if that means anything. And, there are not many, if any, VHS/DVD>CD rips out in the trading pool. Unnecessary.
