1998.07.22 - Toledo, OH, USA @ The Sports Arena (Non-Ozzfest)
cu.org DAT-1 clone
Source A: DAT --- Core Sound Binaurals > Sony TCD-D8 (Oade Bros Mod II) @ 48 KHZ
Position: Inside of Board
Transfer: DAT-M > Tascam DA-20 > coax > Audiophile 24/96 > Sound Forge > WAV (transfer by cu.org/GSP)
Taper: Jeff Sebastianelli
Gen: Master Recording or "0" Generation (in WAV)
Notes: Cu.org did not know this recording existed until some time in 2008. This was recorded from inside the sound booth area by the taper. It almost seems like the microphones were stable throughout the recording as there is no movement, whatsoever, noticeable. I mean, no phasing, no abject crowd noise & nothing to disturb the equipment. According to a good friend of the taper, Jeff was unhappy with the results of this recording as it is a bit distant in comparison with the other high quality Tool recordings he pulled. However, he was quite an apparent perfectionist. This recording is definitely one of the most stable sounding cu.org has yet heard & the quality is at least better than the average recording for this time period. In fact, one could say this would be average for the 10K Days era of 2006, 2007 but definitely higher quality than many in the 2001, 2002 Lateralus-era recordings. The set list on this recording is fantastic & the addition of this riveting performance of Third Eye is worth the price of admission alone. There is a video of this recording that has floated around for simply years; various rips range in quality with one apparently transferred from a 1G VHS tape being the best. However, the audio on that recorded video source is blown.

We're going to try something different. We're going to look at one of our songs from a different angle. Now sometimes you look at something from a different angle & you see a whole different thing, a whole different taste, a whole different person, by shifting your perspective you can see it in a different way or its like you see it like it's the first time you've seen it - we're going to try that tonight.
Third Eye

Source B: Unknown Video Recording
Position: Back Tier
Transfer: (reported 1st Gen VHS > DVD) (transfer by Distortion)
Notes: This is a good quality video recording, however, the audio is a bit brickwalled. This is pervasive throughout the recording thus rendering the overall probability of sitting through the entirety of this source rather low. I made it through, finally, after about ~10 years since the first time I saw this by playing the CSB>D8 audio instead of the video audio. That said, there are really some interesting camera work by the filmer. He had some balls as it is virtually a duck-free, concise & focused recording that not only attains some pleasant close-ups but also steady full-band captures. Particularly for the year & unknown information concerning the equipment; this source would be legend - if the audio wasn't semi-blown.
