2002.10.19 - Erie, PA, USA @ Erie Civic Center
Source A: Mini Disc --- Core Sound Binaurals > Sharp MT-90
Taper: Henry D.
Gen: 1st from Master
Notes: Very nice MD recording. There is a bit of crowd talking & noise but, regardless, pretty good. Vocals, instruments & the ambience are all very sharp & crisp - something lacking in many recordings. No brickwall but, again, crowd noise can sometimes seem louder than it really should be. If nothing else, this recording is a nice capture of Tool doing what they do best - playing live. Nothing more to say other than this is the only time they played 4degrees the entire leg of this 2002 tour. It is debatable as to what the best-sounding recording to be out for trade is, perhaps this is a contender?

Source B: Mini Disc --- Audio Technica Hyper-Cardioids > Sharp MT-831
Notes: A very good audience recording. The sound is crisp, clear & focused; probably the best sounding recording of this show to yet surface. No brickwall nor any 'musical' issues of any sort. The only problem I have, I suppose, is the taper talking while recording. If it is Intermission or after a show, that is fine IMO. But, not while a song is going on. It may seem intelligent at the time but, retrospectively, it is just unprofessional. I've done it before but do not do it now as it is a pet-peeve. As for the band, they were -on- this night...being a Saturday. This is the only tour-date that they played 4 degrees. Interesting. .....For those that care; I saw them the night before in Kalamazoo & the night after (this show) in East Lansing. Would've gone to this show had I not had a massive exam...oh well. It just figures that the show I didn't attend had the only appearance of 4degrees for the Fall 2002 tour.

Source C: DAT --- Sound Professional Slimline Cardioids > Sony TCD-D8
Notes: Well, this date happened to have a rather unique setlist and was the only show from the 2002-Fall tour that they played 4* so, no matter what, a decent recording of this performance is desired. And that is exactly what this recording is: decent. Not superb, not terrible but decent. The taper was not close to the stacks thus was a good idea to use cardioids mics but by not being by the stacks + using cardioids mics, something is lost in a recording. This is just my opinion, feel free to argue with it. The levels may have been a little bit too high even as when the crowd cheers it sounds as though there may be a -tiny- brickwall in the right channel. The instruments are clear & the listening factor is definitely there but I am curious how many people would have this on repeat, over and over. Know what I mean? Now, I am not trying to negate the obvious qualities of this recording as it has many but there are better recordings out there. However, no matter how you slice it, this is a recording that most likely deserves a place in your Tool collection and is an accurate representation of what this band can deliver to the sheep... hey, shit, isn't that us?

Source D: DAT --- Core Sound Binaurals > Sony PCM-M1 (Oade Bros Mod II) @ 48 KHZ
Position: Floor / Front of Stack
Taper: Smagmapig
Notes: Awesome recording of one of the better set lists of 2002. This was the only time they performed 4 degrees this tour leg? Without a doubt, this source is the definitive recording of this performance... I think a lot of tapers could learn a lot from the taping skills of this individual. Tight recording of a great performance w/a quasi-interesting set list = one for the record books. Just a top job; so clear.

Notes: A superb recording. Honestly, this is in the running for the best sounding capture from this night. Excellent work to the taper, thanks for taping & sharing. The notations from the taper, I thought, were hardly noticeable. What is noticeable is the occasional phasing from, I believe, some fool leaning up on/against the taper. Minimal crowd noise and relatively clear capture of Tool. Definite replay-a-bility. Highly recommended.
