Notes 2023: There are, apparently, two versions of this 1991 NYE gig. The version which has been around for ages is sourced from a cassette most likely: DAT > Cassette. Then there is the actual DAT @ 48 KHZ which was acquired from Sylvia Massy under the “Sylvia Massy Outtakes”.
Notes: This is the recording from which two songs off of Tool’s 1992 EP Opiate were sourced from; the New Years Eve 1991 gig @ The Jello Loft! Although this has made it’s way, slowly, through the rounds for at minimal a few decades, this is an amazing capture of a band really taking form. The audio quality is SBD but there is a certain harshness to the feed, or is it rawness, which is somewhat off-putting on some level. Enough talking between the songs with Paul and MJK vying for speaking-time to be interesting, the band was giving off some serious OGT energy. Rumor has it that Massy ran the SBD feed out of the second floor window into a van chock full of recording equipment. MJK says “throw that Bob Marley wanna be motherfucker out of here” after Hush, before Sweat whereas on Opiate, that is edited to sound like he said it before Jerk-Off. There you go, everyday, adults should learn at minimal one thing for a healthy, cognitively astute brain.
