Taper: The Collective: “MItaper78, Luke W., Anon, ITS1984”
Gen: collectiveunconscious.org > Master Recording
Notes: Festival dates are always somewhat sketchy as you do not know the vibe of the crowd, are generally in large/spread-out areas in parking lots or ‘grounds’ and often the headliner, the reason The Collective went (i.e.: Tool), has a truncated set. As was the case for Crew Stadium as well as the Daytona performance. Only real addition was 46 & 2, arguably Stinkfist but hey this was Tool performing somewhat of a greatest hits set, right? Nope. Tool is going to play what Tool is going to play. I will say it certainly was pleasant to watch Tool without any concern of getting kicked out due to taking pictures as this ‘Tool rule’ was not implemented nor was it enforced. Bands also performing which we remember were Disturbed (with the guitarist of Aerosmith, Brad Whitford guesting on a couple tunes) and a Columbus based band called Beartooth who were actually quite decent. Recordings are what would expect from such a Festival setting. As it is, two of the three recordings are out in the wild however they have thus far evaded being put on the Internet… Relying on actually engaging in the art of what it is to trade with other tapers, not those with entitlement on their mind when it comes to everything-all-the-time-everywhere-at-once.

2023-10-03 - Loveland, CO, USA @ Blue Arena
Source A: Solid State — Audio Technica 853 > Sony A10
Taper: zeegrizzle
Location: Taped from lower bowl section T row 8 down right by Adam’s corner.
Notes: If one were, say, a Tool connoisseur with some understanding of the setlist schematics, perhaps this one would leave you scratching your head. This is a setlist with the band kind of trying to figure out what the next steps are going to be. They put Stinkfist after Descending before Intermission(!)? I wish I knew emoji’s enough to show a mind being blown. This is also the first performance of Rosetta Stoned since 2009? Maybe a couple rougher spots but still awesome to see it back in the set. Arbitrarily, this is an interesting performance to listen to based on the setlist itself - it’s a hybrid of 2022 tour and what the band would perform the rest of 2023 and into 2024. And since this is thus far the only recording to be released, as there are more than one, it appears that zeegrrizzle upgraded the taping equipment situation from Sony A10 (built in) to Audio Technica… And the results are quite positive. Nice pull here! Guitar, bass, drums and vocals are by and large quite clear throughout the recording and movement is limited to nuances. Great stuff - I wish all AT853 recordings sounded this good. Nice capture of the first headline of 2023 by Tool. Again, big props to zeegrizzle as this is a sweet capture of Tool.

2023.10.06 - Sacramento, CA, USA @ Aftershock (Festival)
Source A: Solid State — Schoeps MK4 > Sony PCM-A10
Taper: TJ
Location: Recorded on rail dead center, 50 meters from stage.
Notes: Hands down, superb capture of Tool. Vocals are clear, drums highlight Carey’s precision, guitar is clear and Chancellor’s bass notes hit different. Hit hard. Surprisingly, the only source to come out even though a ton of folks taped this performance, but, it is what it is. There are some instances of drift or travel particularly though middle half of FI although this is a weak criticism of an otherwise fantastic AUD recording. For sure, among the best of any 2023 Tool captures known to exist. Big thumbs up to the taper.

Is he focusing on pulling a very good film of Tool performing whilst at the same time simply pulling MK4 as a separate source because he can? Yeah. Video is centered for 97% of the performance and is really clear/clean. Sound is solid without distortion. The taper put the file on YouTube, thus, this is as close to ‘master’ as one is going to find barring whatever compression YouTube may or may not put on it’s uploads. Wonderful addition to your Tool collection. Nice job, dude.

Notes: For some reason, I wanted to find an issue with this source/recording, however, I cannot. It is fantastic pull. Vocals high in the mix and the band is straight-up on point. The taper pulled an AUD recording of a festival performance that is quite simply hard to explain how pleasant it is. A wonderful capture of a rather diverse Tool set. Excellent.

Notes: Not gonna lie, this source and Source A sound remarkably similar. Which is a compliment to both as each CMC-8 sources are remarkable. I will say, this has a bit more crowd participation if you will as the folks around the taper were certainly more vocal.
Time: 1:53:03
Source C: Solid State — The Sound Professionals SP-CMC-4U- > Sony PCM-A10
Taper: ijwthstd
Notes: Something in the water at Power Fest or what? Another clean recording with some but not a terrible amount of audience participation. This source does feature what appears to be a certain amount of movement or float particularly during FI and Swamp Song. Lots of movement. Quality is great but the physical issues of movement (or the wind?) do detract from what would otherwise be a gnarly Festival Capture (which is always more difficult by default).
Time: 1:55:15
Source D: Solid State — Audio Technica 853 > Sony PCM-A10
Taper: zeegrizzle
Location: Taped from Section 105 Row Y
Notes: Out of the alternative sources for this performance, this one has a very left-leaning sound to it. Meaning, it seems like the left microphone was pointed towards the speakers whereas the right channel was not directionally pointed in the direction of the sound sources - which is particularly important for Cardioid microphones as they are by default directional. Bass is heavy in the left channel. As such, some EQ’ing would be recommended. The vocals are not as prominent in this mix as they are a bit more obscured. Still, a fine recording but with more issues than other sources available.

Notes: Billy Strings guested on Jambi which is both unexpected and exceptionally cool. Billy Strings completely goes off the rails delivering, what, a four minute guitar solo that just keeps killing it? If you do not know who Billy Strings is, brace yourself. He is a guitar legend from the Great State of Michigan who is able to blend genres of music into his Americana inspired roots. As it is, this recording, is ok at best. Source: Solid State — Sennheiser Ambeo Smart Headset > Apple iPhone
Taper: Grizzly Adams
Notes: When I first saw the source info on this, I was excited as it is very rare to have Sennheiser Ambeo Microphones used in a live concert setting for recording. Although that is not their natural intent or habitat, per se, these microphones are great there is even one that is a lot like the Core Sound Octomic Second Chamber which is rare in the wild and wild to listen to (when properly recorded). However, this is not remotely as interesting. This is a $50 plug into your phone set up. It lacks. Sound is blah or as good as, you know, the source information. Source: Solid State — Tascam DR-08
Taper: Mike Ziegler
Notes: First appearance of Intolerance in 2023. By leaps and bounds better than a phone built-in audio source this recording is surprisingly clearer than a lot of built-in recorder/microphone. In isolation, this source could be quite the chosen-one particularly with being the only released source as of 9/2024 however there are screamers very close to the source which does detract. Bass flutters throughout but no distortion and at times, even though the vocals are buried for the lions share of this recording, it is somewhat representative of the music coming from the stacks.

Source: Solid State — 4x IEM > Sound Devices MixPre-10 II > PC via USB > iZotope RX 9 > Wavepad > FLAC
Taper: LeifH
Notes by Taper: I first saw Tool in this very building towards the end of the final leg of the 10,000 Days tour in 2007. Happened on a free ticket just after the show started. Even though it was probably one of the worst gigs of the tour and nearly turned into a riot, the 2007 concert blew me away and I would go see them a bunch more times. Fast forward about 16 years (!) and Tool is playing the same little hockey rink. I've upgraded my recording gear a bit since then but at the same time my interest in the band has waned. The "new" album just doesn't do it for me, nor the ticket prices, nor the $500 CDs/LPs. Don't get me started on the VIP thing. But hey, good for them I guess... Anyhow, this was a fun recording to do and I think it turned out reasonably well. I hope you enjoy it. Please do not re-re-re-master this audio other than for personal use.
Notes by CU.ORG: Ok so this is cool. This taper pulled off a multiple (4x) source and mixed it together in post. Or not. Unsure. I listen to it and, during FI particularly, you can hear what sounds sort of like, I don’t know how to describe it other than when you stake a 3 or 4 1/8” cable and patch it into a different source; there are audio qualities in this source which are atypical of elements of on the fly IEM matrix recording (signal dampens, impedance). I would suggest you take a listen and form your own conclusion. Could be other mixing, I don’t know. The mix of this, to my ears, is quite caliente (or hot) as in loud. Clearly an IEM recording of, taking an educated guess the MJK mix, Production mix, DC mix and with the heavier bass notes JC’s newly minted IEM adaptation beginning this leg of the Tool’s tour.

Notes: Clean and clear recording of Tool. Surprisingly so. MJK’s vocals are clear in the mix and the performance is rather spot on for the most part. Minimal AUD noise with much of the chatter not picked up due to the Cardioid microphones. In 2024, this reminds of the best of the CSB>M1 recordings of Tool from the early 2000’s. Some of those recordings are still just kick ass - just like this one does. And perhaps nostalgic for all sorts of reasons. Perhaps this recording will be that for someone, sometime. I hope so.

Taper: tapeworm48
Location / Notes by Taper: Recorded from FOB, 1st section right side, 8th row. Opening act was Steel Beans (not recorded). The Tinybox battery died after 2 hours, so the final song (Forty-Six & 2) is missing. The 12 minute intermission was also cut out. M10 set at 4; Tinybox at mid gain. Raw transfer with no fades or EQ.
Notes: What you have here is one of the best recordings from 2023 by a long time and dedicated Tool taper, among other bands, tapeworm48. Wonderful taper and all around nice guy in reality, having met him socially twice in Ann Arbor, MI. The only complaint realistically lodged at this source is the false start of Intolerance by the band, which is actually rather endearing and sort of funny as MJK is like “ hey guys….”. The other issue is missing 46&2, however, whatever this recording just kills it! Excellent work, V! Taper: geordy
Location: Recorded from 19th row floor, left side.
Notes: Almost (or is he already?) legendary Tool taper, Geordy, offered up yet another sick recording of Tool for the masses. Clean, clear, concise and as professional as you can get for someone who is as much an avid biker to/from work as a Tool fan. A lot of people don’t realize that Geordy is quite progressive in regards to emissions and does what he can for environment - how cool is that? Last time we crossed paths was January 2020 at the Nashville Tool show and I recall his interest in staying healthy while doing a little bit each day. As it is, this recording sounds way better than it should but, I believe, he uses the DPA MMA 6000 box that allows one to adjust input settings at the box. Most people who bought DPA’s back in the day did not shell out the extra cash for the upgraded box, myself included, which tends to lead to a bassy recording - not the case here. This is as smoother than it should be. If this taper and I stood next to each other with the same microphone model, DPA 4061, same recorder (M10) and our battery boxes (MPS 6030 and MMA 6000) I believe his recording would turn out better. Not by much but enough. Excellent taping although they cut out Intolerance which shortened the set, but, hey what are you going to do?

Notes: Although this source is the one-off which features Rory Scovel (guitar) on Intolerance I had to look up who, exactly, that is. Dude is a comedian who loves Tool’s music and he performed Intolerance instead of AJ - which is noteworthy. As for the recording it is just another iPhone recording, nothing that special however it does seem to capture a bit more bass and mids than most. Notes: Same taper as 11/04/2023, this source sounds a lot like that performance. Muddy for the most part but this would actually be on par with recordings from the early 2000’s during the early Lateralus-era. Vocals are clearer than expected and the swish on the cymbals is less noticeable. All things considered, for being recorded with literally a phone this is decent for what it is. It’s hard to categorize… Is phone taping really taping? You are not bringing anything illicit in so it’s kind of like ‘anyone can do it’ which is true with taping with microphones and proper recorders, however, you take a risk. This, the risk is basically ameliorated. Is this taping? Must be.

Notes: The Sennheiser ME-104 is a Cardioid microphone and I have not seen it in use much let alone for a Tool performance. There is a version where it can sit around your head and you could use it as a transmitter microphone and you can use it to record, say, a Tool show. Or, there are Sennheiser 4 and 104 (not the ME version) which are all good Cardioid microphones. Unsure which one this is, however gauging that the taper is using a phone, I would bet that it would be something like this picture - something that is used for speaking during a presentation but can also double for a concert. I would also take a guess that this was using only one microphone. By far, this is the best recording source for this performance as it is surprisingly clear and clean. Minimal movements but there are a few.

Notes: To be clear, and I have had this happen more than I’d like to admit, if your batteries fail during a concert you paid money for, drove/commuted to, spent your time to do and you planned to bring in taping equipment; the failure is on you, the taper. I just had that happen to me last week at an AJR concert with my boys - before that was a source for a Sleep Token gig in Detroit in September 2023. Not equipment failure, my failure as I did not properly monitor how long the batteries had been used in my recorders. As it is, this source sounds just like any other Edirol R-09 recording (I have one from 2006). It is what it is. This is actually better than a lot of other solid state recorders and it is also better sounding than iPhone recordings. Crisp, clear, clean with sharp almost biting vocals throughout. AJ’s guitar work is crunchy as Chancellor’s bass clicks perfect with DC’s masterful skills on ye olde drums. When I say DPA 4080 microphones sound great, I mean that. Tb’s (is he the only current DPA 4080 Tool taper?) by and large are among the best AUD recordings to be released…. Location: Recorded from Row Y on floor...so...25 rows from stage? What is that...150 feet from stage? Left side of stage.
Notes: Another iPhone source. Yay. Distant and undefined, this is as good as the source info describes. Especially when you have a source like the DPA 4088 it makes this iPhone source just superfluous. That’s about it.

Notes by Galen: Night #1 of two back to back performances by everyone’s favorite Americana-infused psychedelic virtuosos, The Scott Hill Clown Band. There were numerous members of The Collective in the audience not just this evening but both nights. Even well more than a year after the fact it is still unclear how many sources were pulled I’m just going by what was compiled by my man ITS1984 and even above is not fully representative, apparently. It was nice, from my perspective, to just chill and enjoy a show and let the faceless Collective do the hard work… right? Scotiabank Arena in Toronto is a fantastic venue in the heart of the Arena District. Numerous hotels and Air BNB’s are situated around the venue including lots of bars, restaurants and more bars. Although not a sold out show, the venue was packed for the most part although, to be honest, the very top section of the venue had black material blocking off the very top section. The setlist order is somewhat interesting as they moved Jambi to the song prior to intermission due to Alex Liveson, of Rush, performing on the song including a sick Passage to Bangkok guitar solo extended into the rest of the song. It’s quite interesting. Great performance with a true living legend of Rock N’ Roll. The loosely-associated tapers of The Collective released a matrixed version of this on CD only, at this point… Which is wild as a lot of vehicles do not even have CD players in their vehicles anymore… I mean, can you imagine being intentional about choosing what to listen to and not having everything available all at once? Sounds terrible.

”Allright now check it out. Going to have a special guest come up but I need you to guess who it is. Ready? You. No, it’s not Celine Dion. Not Joni Mitchell, no. Who, who do you think? I don’t know who the fuck that is. No, not Art Garfunkle. I’ll give you a hint. His name rhymes with Alex, like, exactly. His last name rhymes with Lifeson almost precisely. I don’t know wh the fuck that is but apparently someone in the band knows him…”

Notes by Galen: Night #2 of Tool @ Scotiabank Arena and they certainly did not disappoint and neither did members of The Collective - hopefully sometime soon I’ll have a definitive list of all the sources but it’s hard when two members are currently overseas in the Marines with Luke currently gearing up for another tour as a chinook machine gunner. Y’all come from different walks of life and careers but are united by the passion of the music of Tool. Speaking of which, Night #2, yes, Alex Liveson of Rush guested on Jambi and did a reprisal of the previous night and it sounded just as good if not better. They switched out The Pot for Intolerance and Stinkfist for 46 & 2 (comparing night one to night two) which made for somewhat of a different experience. The visuals this tour were in 4K something different than previous tours - nice job to Junior. Directly after the show, some of us ran out to a sports bar woefully understaffed for thousands of stoned Tool fans for beer and probably the best pizza in Canada. Highlights after the show involved a fella wearing a jacket with the every classy statement “Assholes Live Forever” and, my personal favorite, what appears to be Spiderman tackling drunk Tool fans who were more than a little mad that the white, sticky webbing was (NOT) web slinging sauce but something else entirely. I was told that this rag tag group of tapers’ matrixed the sources together for one super source and put it to CD. I dig it but really this is only fighting the inevitable making it online. It’s not like CD’s or vinyl recording are ever going to be cool again, right?
Notes: This was the first time I was able to grab enough of the confetti pieces to complete the puzzle. Many people have done it, although a lot of it is luck, perseverance and not being afraid to get your hands gross from grabbing confetti of the floor of a Tool show. Was worth it. Members of The Collective did help, so, thanks y’all.
