2009.08.07 - Cincinnati, OH, USA @ PNC Pavilion
Picture taken on an antique 2nd Generation iPhone approximately three minutes before Tweakbird took the stage (opening for Tool). Thankfully, they had two designated drivers; Justin Chancellor and Adam Jones… Adam giving thumbs up to the tapers out there!

Notes 2024: Having not listened to this source for at least 15 years, I spent some time on it after I found the original file. For some reason, I remember this source being distant and muddy, however, it is actually the clearest DPA 4061 > Edirol R09 of the AUD sources pulled in 2009 by myself and those in The Collective. Decided to keep some pre-show and a little post-show on this recording as it captures myself and my old, lest he not be forgotten, Nameloc hanging out. For those that were lucky enough to know him as a person and as a taper, Nameloc was just a stand-up guy. It’s… it’s interesting to hear one’s own voice and the voice of someone who is no longer alive on a recording, let alone, a Tool recording. Miss you, buddy. This source was not released until 2025 and hope this finds a spot in your collection, if not your heart!
Notes 2009: If you would like to see the picture I snapped on my iPhone of Adam + Justin riding a go-cart with the opening band 'Tweak Bird' on the back about ~1 minute before they were to go on stage (7:58pm), click here. Also, take note, of a thumbs-up to the tapers?
Notes 2009: Was there a bad seat in the house? I don't think so. From what I read this venue was the smallest of this brief summer tour. Was nice to see a Tool show & have just a pleasant time. Met up with my buddy Nameloc down at the show just in time to sort of hear the sound check by straining our ears, leaning up against the fence, over the buzz of the trucks to sort of hear Tool perform. I tried recording it but the results, I could tell, would have been just a waste of space or tape. Was cool though. The PLC Pavilion is an outdoor amphitheatre that consists of only covered seating; max capacity something like maybe 3,900 or so. The parking lot, well the damn thing, is connected to a quasi cool water + amusement park just outside of Ohio's own Cin-City. What a mix of people; stoned Tool-heads & families enjoying a day at the water park; who doesn't appreciate a little bit of chaos every once in a while? I know I sure do. Before the show, technically right before the opener (Tweak Bird) were going on stage, I took this pic of Adam, Justin & Tweak Bird on a golf cart going into the 'crew only' area by the busses. I saw them come out, had my iPhone ready. What's that - is Adam giving a thumbs up to the tapers? Or is he just being friendly, you decide... As for my recording, I think it turned out really quite good. Pretty easy, I mean, you set it & forget it using hard disk nothing to drown in your own jizz over, eh? The performance, although pretty good, you could tell that MJK was saving 'something' for the next night's performance at Lollapalooza. The only real 'scream' was on Flood.

Really, and I say this not feeling like I am going out on any limb, but, this is most likely going to be the definitive AUD recording of this show. It's that good, really is. Nameloc01 & I stood directly next to each other whilst recording the performance of Tool that fine Summer evening after spending an afternoon enjoying the scenery of the PNC parking lot & it is amazing how subtle differences help contribute to the whole. Although I do think that both my source + Tim's SP>R09 source came out well it is clear to me, at least, that this source captures the sound the best. I swear, listening to this the first time I swore I heard at least a dozen things that I missed when I listened to my source. All in all, this is just a fantastic recording of a, well, good if not routine performance. MJK's vocals were buried a bit throughout the performance but you would not think so when listening to this particular source. Top job; a definitive recording from this era of live performances. From what I understand the taper does not perceive that it is his mission/place/'drive' to release music for people who did not tape the show or could have taped the show based on whatever lame-excuses some folks may have. I, sincerely, agree. That said, look for this released as a torrent w/o source information in MP3 form very soon! Or look for it to be bundled up w/thousands upon thousands of hours that few would listen to on a My Book . Oh wait, I don't think that's going to happen with this one...
Notes:
Quick technical note here; this was given to me on CDR w/the tracks not split-up in raw form. Really, kind of takes me back to how trading used to be. And, as far as I'm concerned, should be.

Notes: I'm a pretty big fan of this recording. Has this crunchy intensity that is just so often missing from live recordings. You can sort of feel the bass at times, in the back of the head, as it beats into your soul. Although MJK appeared (to me at least) to be rather quiet in the mix while at this show, this source does a rather nice job of pulling the voice out of the mix a bit. That said, each instrument is balanced quite pleasantly throughout. There are a few instances of microphone movement & crowd noise but these are merely fleeting non-issues that are virtually invisible. According to the taper, security was very tight where he was taping - however - he did a very nice job. This performance may be about as average as the 2009 Summer Tour, however, this recording it anything but average. Well above average? Something like that.
